Kudos to Erin Davis. Erin won the Best New Producer award at this year’s Third Coast International Audio Festival. The piece, “Except Me” was produced at Salt and that’s what we’re featuring on today’s Saltcast.

Erin is the third student to win this award for a piece produced at Salt. “Hard to Say” by Bente Birkland won in 2004 and “Just Another Fish Story” by Molly Menschel took the prize in 2005.

Check out all the winning pieces from this year’s Third Coast competition here.

Excelsior, Erin. Onward and upward!

Love this story especially the Appleby’s scene. It really opens up the story and adds a new dimension to your narrative to hear Marissa goofing off with her friend. I can hear the trust you built with her. Thanks for sharing! Can’t wait to hear more from you Erin.

Great story Erin! For those of us trying to learn radio ourselves, can you share what equipment you used to record this story?

    Hey Elin,

Erin used a Sony Minidisc player/recorder. The mic was an Electro-Voice EV RE-50. It’s possible she also used a shotgun mic, the Audio Technica AT-835b. Those are the two fairly standard reporter mics we use at Salt. By the way, Salt is no longer using MDs. We have Sony D50 flash recorders. Thanks for asking!

    Best,
    Rob

When I first listened to this piece I remember thinking how seamless its movement is – dialogue/transitions, music, background noise… I think that’s what helps it to deliver such a visceral & emotive impact on the listener. Well done and keep up the good work!

    Erin:
    A magnificent piece.

The pace was perfect, and blended together poetically.

You have a bright future, and lots of guts!
